The commercial cost can be significant. A delayed fresh produce load may lose value quickly, while a rejected container can create storage, demurrage, return freight, treatment, or destruction costs. For high-value seeds and nursery stock, delays can also cause missed planting seasons and damaged customer relationships.

How Importers and Exporters Can Reduce Risk

Phytosanitary compliance works best when buyer, seller, grower, packer, logistics provider, and broker share the same requirements before goods move. The exporter controls production and documentation, while the importer often has the clearest view of destination rules and permit conditions.

Build phytosanitary checks into supplier qualification. Before placing an order, ask suppliers whether they have export experience for the target market, documented traceability, access to required inspections, and familiarity with the destination’s pest restrictions. A low purchase price can become expensive if the supplier cannot produce compliant documents on time.

For recurring trade lanes, create a shipment checklist that links each product to its usual requirements.
